Finals Day at Royal Blackheath – Surrey vs. BB&O
Having travelled to Royal Blackheath on Tuesday for a practice round, the Surrey team arrived well-prepared and ready to face BB&O on finals day.
Team Surrey and the order of play:
The first point for Surrey came from Simon Crockett, who secured a convincing 4&3 win. Tord Nilsson battled hard but narrowly lost 2&1. Nigel Pimm, after being four down through seven holes, staged a strong comeback to reach the 18th just one down. His valiant effort fell just short, with a missed putt on the final hole resulting in a 1 down loss.
Wins from Ian Attoe and Andy Inglis added crucial points for Surrey, while Martin Slumbers was edged out 4&3. Julian Tedder, one up standing on the 18th tee, played an excellent approach shot onto the green to clinch his match, putting Surrey 4–3 ahead with three matches still out on the course.
John Cassidy lost a closely fought contest 2&1, bringing the overall score level.
That left Ian Barker and Ian Slater as the final two matches. Ian Slater was defeated 3&2, meaning Ian Barker needed a win. Both he and his BB&O opponent struck fine tee shots on the 18th and found the green with their approaches. BB&O putted first and missed, leaving Ian a chance to win the hole and force a playoff. His putt looked promising but narrowly missed. BB&O holed their return putt to halve the match and clinch overall victory.
The match was played in excellent spirit, with high-quality golf on display from both sides.
Congratulations to BB&O Golf on their well-earned win.
