The annual friendly match between Hertfordshire and Surrey Under 16s took place on Sunday 6th July at Aldwickbury Golf Club amidst the circling thunderstorms.
After a short delay play was able to start and a youthful looking Surrey team let by Teddy Shaw (Walton Heath) took to the course. Due to a few overnight illnesses the Surrey team were reduced to just 8 players in what is normally a 10man singles match. As a result, Teddy and Theo Harris of Coombe Wood led the side out in two triangular matches against players from Hertfordshire. Teddy was able to produce 1 point from his 2 matches and Theo produced 2 fantastic wins due to some tidy work around the greens. A strong start for Surrey.
The following games went the way of the home side with with Alex Morbray of West Byfleet and Emmanuel Paris of Walton Heath succumbing 3&2 and 2down respectively.
With the sides level on points things were getting a little tight and the pressure building. Up stepped Luke Jackson (Sunningdale Heath) who produced the round of the day to win his match 7&6. This clearly inspired his playing partner Connor Taggert (Addington Court) who turned his game around by winning the last 3 holes to win 2 up and secure at least a half match for Surrey.
In the final match, Zhao Yuqian from Royal Mid Surrey struggled to get any momentum going and sadly lost his match 4&3. This left it all on Zach Patel of Burhill who won 2 of his last 3 holes to reach the 18th tee 1down. After a fantastic tee shot into position A from Zach, he watched his opponents ball ran all the way through the fairway into the lake which meant Zach could play a little more conservatively and secure a half match and keep the winning streak going for the U16 team!
Well done to all the players, what a fantastic year it has been so far!
As always, thank you to Herts for a great game and wonderful hospitality. We look forward to welcoming you next year.
