On Sunday 29th June our u16 side concluded the group stages of the SEG League South as we travelled to Sandford Springs to take on hosts Hampshire and Kent in a triangular match. Temperatures soared to nearly 30 degrees, which make playing conditions extremely tricky for all the teams.
The team for the match was as follows:
Zahn Bopiah (Sunningdale)
Sean Collins (Burhill)
Kodi Dean (Burhill)
Caelan Dhami (Walton Heath)
Finlay Fergusson (Burhill)
Roland Gibson (Sunningdale)
Christos Pillay (Walton Heath)
Teddy Shaw (Walton Heath)
Playing in the 2nd match Roland Gibson adopted a relentless pace to secure the first points of the day with 7&6 wins over both his opponents. Zahn Bopiah, who had got us underway in match 1, was not far behind in securing comfortable wins of 3&2 and 4&2 to give Surrey the ideal start.
Kodi Dean signalled his intent early, by getting off to a flying start and was in complete charge of his matches all the way to the 14th hole where he secured 5&4 wins over both counties. Match 4 saw the ever-reliable Sean Collins in a fierce battle with his Hampshire counterpart, which saw them share the spoils down 18, having secured the win over Kent on the 16th green.
Ever present Finlay Fergusson, then secured the overall victory for Surrey on the day, by returning 3&2 and 3&1 triumphs after some great golf.
Match 6 saw Caelan Dhami go down the 18th with both opponents in front of a growing crowd as other matches finished. In the end a solid par on 18 was enough to take a 2up victory over Kent, however he succumbed to a 1dn defeat to an impressive Hampshire opponent.
In matches 7 & 8, Walton Heath players Teddy Shaw and Christos Pillay played some excellent golf on their way to delivering 1.5 points for the team from both their matches to cap another fine day at the office for this fine group of players.
Match result: Surrey 14 – 2 Kent, Surrey 13 – 3 Hampshire.
This was an impressive end to the group stages with the team going fully unbeaten, with a record of 37 points won out of a possible 48 across the 6 matches played to this point.
We now progress to the SEG League Finals on September 28th at Haywards Heath, where we’ll take on the winners of the North and Central divisions.
