On Sunday 27th April, Surrey Under 16 Team got their League campaign underway with a trip to the picturesque Littlestone Golf Club on the Kent coast where we played both Kent and Sussex in a triangular match. The sun was shining and there was a light breeze, which was the perfect compliment to a course in good condition.
With balancing GCSE's and other commitments, the decision had been made not to play a practice round, but a prep call under the guidance of Head Coach, Greg Brodie, had given the team a good understanding of the golf course and strategy to take it on.
The team for the match was as follows:
Zahn Bopiah was out first and got Surrey off to a very strong start, comfortably winning his Sussex match early and then holding out for the win against Kent on the 18th hole. Players 2 & 3 were Kodi Dean and Finlay Fergusson, both of whom delivered 1 win from their 2 matches, Kodi securing a victory over Sussex, and Finlay against Kent.
Match 4 saw Caelan Dhami making his debut for Surrey, and he delivered in fine style with wins of 5&4, and 4&3 respectively.
When Sean Collins then delivered 2 more wins in match 5, beating Kent 6&4 and Sussex 3&2, it was clear we were in a very strong position to go onto team victory.
Unfortunately Teddy Shaw met stiff opposition and lost both matches, but in match 7, Aaron Moody returned another double win with 4&3 and 3&2 triumphs.
And, as the team all gathered round the 17th green to watch the final match, it then fell to Harry Weatherhead to sink a 15 foot birdie putt to deliver 2&1 victories over both Kent and Sussex to warm applause from the gallery.
Overall, a great day and no a better start to the season couldn’t have been envisaged.
Match result: Surrey 12 – 4 Sussex, Surrey 12 – 4 Kent.
The next league match of the year is on June 15th at home (Betchworth Park) to Hampshire and Sussex.
