A full field of 72 players (36 pairs) teed it up at the fantastic Hankley Common Golf Club on Wednesday 18th October for the eighth county card meeting of the season. The format of the day was a fourball better ball stableford off the yellow tees, with prizes for the top three pairs, as well as two nearest the pin prizes for the 2nd & 16th holes.
The first players teed off in cold, drizzly conditions, which would only worsen as the day went on as Storm Babet made its way to the UK! The weather made for very difficult scoring conditions, and of the early groups, the leading score was a better ball total of 41 stableford points from Stephen Puckett of Burhill & Andrew Moye of The Addington.
Andrew had a day to remember at Hankley, as he got a hole-in-one on the 2nd hole, out in the first group of the day! In fact, the players in the second group out weren't sure if it was a wind up when the nearest the pin marker said "hole-in-one" after only one group had played the hole!
However, it was in fact true, and somewhat unsurprisingly, none of the other players in the field were able to match Andrew's amazing feat, meaning that the nearest the pin on the 2nd hole was his! He also very generously put his card behind the bar for all the other players to get a drink after their round, so many thanks to Andrew for doing this!
Despite leading the way for most of the day, as the last few groups came in, Stephen & Andrew were replaced at the top of the leaderboard firstly by Antonio Rossi & Peter Burtonshaw, who also scored 41 points and pipped them on countback, and then by Andrew Fox & Joshua Stapleton (both of Addington Palace), who scored 42 points.
However, this score of 42 points would prove to be enough only for second place, as their fellow Addington Palace members David Blagden & Colin Wren came in with an outstanding better ball score of 48 points! Not only was this an unbelievable score given the horrible weather conditions, but David & Colin actually won this same event in 2022, meaning that they retained their trophy!
Once all the scorecards had been returned and they had been checked over, the final scores read as follows:
Congratulations to all the prize winners, and many thanks to all the players for supporting our county card events and for making the day so enjoyable.
Many thanks to Brian Cox for all his help on the day, doing the registration and checking the scorecards.
A huge thank you also to Hankley Common Golf Club for hosting the event, as always the staff were excellent and the course was in superb condition!
