The annual MUGS match between Surrey and BB&O U16 teams was held at West Hill Golf Club on Thursday 31st August. The weather was damp and windy throughout the day, and it provided difficult conditions for golf, although it was nowhere near as bad as the torrential rain that was forecast! The format was 8 singles matches in the morning, followed by 4 foursomes matches in the afternoon.
Josh Thompson, captain on the day, led the team off in the morning. Josh continued his fine form as of late, reaching the turn 3up, before going on to win his match 6&5. Lewis Dimayuga also produced some brilliant golf in match two, winning his match 5&4.
In match three, Luke Jones struggled early, finding himself 4 down after 9 holes. However, a fantastic back nine from Luke would see him taking the match up the 18th, however it wasn't meant to be, and he finished 1 down.
The next three matches were all very close at the halfway stage, with Henry Bale 1 down, Jack Turner 1up, and Alex Alder all square. Jack played very solid golf on the way back in, winning his match 4&3 on the 15th green. Henry and Alex played well but unfortunately both lost 1 down on the 18th green, meaning that BB&O earned two valuable points by the smallest of margins.
In matches seven and eight, Jamie Botton added to his excellent match play record for Surrey this season with a 3&2 win, whilst George Molloy unfortunately ended up on the wrong end of a very close encounter, losing his match 2&1 on 17.
As the boys tucked into a lunch of burgers & chips, the scores read Surrey 4 - BB&O 4, meaning that it was all to play for in the afternoon foursomes.
Surrey flew out of the blocks in the afternoon session, racing to early leads in all four of the foursomes matches. As the boys teed off on the 10th hole, Josh & Jack were 4up in the top match, whilst in match two, Lewis & Henry were 6up! Both these matches would ultimately end on the 13th hole, both 6&5 wins for Surrey. In match four, George and Jamie were also up the entire way, being 4up after 9 and winning their match 5&3 on the 15th green.
The only close encounter of the afternoon session was match 3, with Surrey being represented by Luke & Alex. They were 1up at the turn, and found themselves in the same position standing on the 18th tee. After a slightly wayward tee shot from Surrey, an errant shot from the BB&O player from the middle of the fairway gave Surrey an opening. After Luke played out nicely from the heather, Alex hit a fantastic long bunker shot into the heart of the green. Two putts later, the hole was halved in 5, and Surrey won the match 1up.
The clean sweep of the afternoon foursomes meant that the final scores read Surrey 8 - BB&O 4, meaning that Surrey had won the MUGS match 2023. Please click here to view the full results.
We thank the MUGS and West Hill for their excellent hospitality, and we look forward to defending the trophy at Huntercombe Golf Club in 2024.
