Surrey U12s beat Essex at Chobham

The match day dawned bright and sunny, and remained that way all day for the second U12 match of 2023, on this occasion being held at Chobham Golf Club, with our opponents being Essex U12s. The players enjoyed a lunch of sandwiches and chips, before heading out onto the course for the match.

The first match out featured Josh Jackson playing a singles match against an Essex player of similar handicap. All square through nine holes, Josh was one down after 14 holes and despite a great effort, sadly shook hands on the 17th to record a 2&1 loss.

Due to a shortage of Essex players, the second match was an all Surrey affair, pitting Jack Robinson and Yumin Do against Sully Donald and Ruaan Vamadevan. This match was also all square through nine holes, but then Jack & Yumin took control to take a 3&1 victory.

Rhys Hughes and Euhwan Kim produced a strong victory for Surrey in match three, with the pair leading by four holes over the front nine, and ending the match with a 6&5 win on the 13th green.

In match four, Leo Boniface, making his Surrey debut, and Carlos Selig were paired together. Due to one of the Essex players not being able to make the match on the day, Leo & Carlos played better ball against one Essex player. The Surrey players were 3 up at the turn, but despite playing on his own, the Essex player produced some fantastic golf on the back nine to take the match all the way to the 17th hole, where it finished as a 2&1 win for Surrey.

Making their first appearances for Surrey, Louis Jell and Harry Norris teamed up in match five and were 3 up after nine holes, in another match where the handicaps were very closely matched. The Surrey duo proved too much for the Essex opposition with the match ending on the 14th green with a 5&4 victory.

Match six was another that brought together players of similar handicaps. In this match, Joey Beale, making his Surrey debut, and Keagan Timmermans were all square after nine holes and fought hard to take a one hole lead up the 18th, which they won to give Surrey a 2 up win.

The final match saw Luke Stachel and George Cheung, both making their debut for Surrey, paired against two Essex players of similar handicaps. Luke and George were 2 up through nine holes and went on to win 5&3 on the 15th green.

Well played to everyone who took part, both Surrey and Essex. A special mention to Yumin Do on making his maiden post-match speech as the Surrey Match Captain. Many thanks to Chobham Golf Club for loaning their course for the match, it is truly appreciated.
