1st Team start off the 2023 season with a win at Sunningdale Golf Club
On the 12th February the Surrey 1st Team kicked off their 2023 season with their annual match at the sublime Sunningdale Golf Club. The course and experience was as ever to the highest standard, and we thank Sunningdale and their members for their continued commitment to county golf.
After a week of frost and fog the teams arrived on a pristine day with both courses in immaculate condition. After an excellent breakfast we set out onto the New course, this year celebrating its 100th anniversary, for the morning foursomes.
Max O'Hagan & Cameron Bell, both now back from America, led off and after a short game masterclass managed to seal victory at 16th, 3&2.
Terry Nicholls & Oscar Lent continued where they left off from the League Final last October with a 4&3 victory and our other experienced/youthful pair of Will Dugdale & Monty Holcombe were solid, finishing their match with a birdie two at the 17th to win 3&1. The final morning foursomes also went the way of Surrey with usual pairing David Corben and Harry Uzzell running out 3&2 winners.
After a successful morning and a 5* lunch we recognised that Sunningdale would come out fighting in the singles to be played over the Old Course.
Early victories for Sunningdale in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th matches brought them back to within striking distance. Sent out in the top match, Max O'Hagan got Surrey on the board by completing a 2&1 win by virtue of holing his 2nd shot at the 17th.
Terry Nicholls & Will Dugdale rolled back the years with strong performances, Terry winning 2&1 and Will shooting a casual 66 to win 4&3. These wins would secure victory for the county and with the final two matches being shared with a win to either side the final score was Surrey 8, Sunningdale 4.
We once again thank Sunningdale for their hospitality and commitment to the match and look forward to playing them again next year in equally wonderful conditions.
