Each club shall be represented by one or two teams, each of which must consist of 2 players with a handicap index between 5.0 and 12.0 inclusive and 3 players with a handicap index between 12.1 and 18.0 inclusive. A player with a handicap index over 12.0 may play in the 5.0 to 12.0 category but must play off a handicap index of 12.0, and a player with a handicap index over 18.0 may play in the 12.1 to 18.0 category but must play off a handicap index of 18.0. For players in the 12.1 to 18.0 category, if their Handicap Index falls below 12.1, they may no longer play in the 12.1 to 18.0 category but may become one of the two players in the 5.0 to 12.0 category.
If a player has represented his club in one or more of the Surrey Fives matches during the current season, and his handicap index then drops below 5.0, he is still eligible to represent his club in the Surrey Fives for the remainder of the season, but he now must play off his new handicap index. However, when playing in his first Surrey Fives match of the season, a player may not have a handicap index below 5.0.
All players must be 18 years of age or over on the day of the match. Team members may be changed from one round to the next, but if a Club inadvertently fields an ineligible player, his individual game shall be awarded to his opponent.
The Competition shall be played as a knockout over 18 holes in match play format and will be played in order of exact handicap index. All matches must be played to a conclusion until the overall competition result is decided. The draw will be made in two sections (East & West) and the ‘View Rules’ Section under the draw will indicate which team shall play home or away for each round.
The mandatory WHS handicap allowance will be 100% (full difference). The away player in each game will receive one additional shot, to be added to their course handicap after all calculations have been applied. If the away player is also a playing member of the home club, the extra shot will not apply. The rest of his team are unaffected and will still receive their additional shot.
