Covid-19 County Statement 12th June 2020

As the lockdown continues to be eased and the number of golfers allowed to play together is more relaxed, which is excellent news, Surrey Golf have reluctantly made the decision that due to the continued situation regards Covid-19 we will be cancelling all County activities and events in July. I can assure you we haven’t taken this decision lightly, but simply have to take into consideration the safety of the players, volunteers and staff who run the events, not to mention those at the Clubs that host us and the accessibility of courses.

When safe to do so and in line with any protocols and restriction that may be in place we will endeavour where possible to re-schedule some of the suspended competitions. But realistically this simply will not be possible with all our events and competitions as we have so many. I will be liaising with the Clubs regards this over the coming months.

It is our intention that the County Championships will be held later in the season but they will take place in a reduced format, with entry numbers also reduced, this is to facilitate Clubs being able to accommodate the events.

We also have every intention of resuming the many Knockout Competitions Surrey run for the members later in the year, when we feel it is safe to do so and continue these over the winter months with the Finals being played in March/April 2021. Team Captains and Clubs have been and will continue to be kept up to date via email.

Regards the very popular County Card events we will continue to monitor the situation and work with the Clubs who are hosting them later in the year to try and get some played.

Sadly, all League and friendly matches have been cancelled for the entire season as have England Golf, the South East Group and other Counties.

Finally, after a long debate we feel there is no safe opportunity for either the RookieTour or Rookie League to be played this year. Both competitions have very high numbers of junior players involved, so we have taken the tough decision to cancel both for 2020. All players and Clubs who have entered will be contacted regards refunds of entry fees.

We will continue to monitor and review the situation on a month by month basis and take guidance from the Government and England Golf. After each review, as more information is released by the authorities, we will provide an update on the impact to our events. I hope to be in a position to update Surreys position at the end of June, by which time we will have more information from the Government, so please keep checking the website.

As we all know, Golf is a great form of exercise but please ensure you adhere to official guidelines for the safety of yourself and others.

As always, our priority is the health and well-being of our players, coaches, referees, volunteers, employees, and staff working at golf clubs and the wider golfing community.

We thank you for your patience and understanding during these unprecedented times.

Cheers and stay safe.

Steve
