Surrey First Team Continue Away Form

The 2nd League match of 2022 for Surrey was away to Dorset at Sherborne GC over the weekend of July 2nd & 3rd.

Due to a combination of our US based players returning and The Logan Trophy taking place at the same time, the team lined up a bit differently to the one that had beaten Sussex in May.

In came Harry & Charlie Crockett, Ben Partridge, and Aadam Syed.

Captain David Corben, Harry Uzzell, Jack Kurzberg and Terry Nicholls made up the excellent team of 8.

The morning foursomes were overall fairly tight, with college teammates Ben & Harry putting the first point on the board winning 5&4.

Jack and Terry had been 2up early on but lost a few holes around the turn to be 2 down playing the long 12th. Gains at the 14th, 15th and 16th got them back in front only to lose the 17th to a Dorset birdie.

After a huge drive from Jack, Terry pitched to 10ft, and Jack rolled in the putt to secure Surrey’s 2nd point of the morning.

Charlie & Aadam fought a tight match all morning with Dorset again making a birdie on the 17th to level the match.

Thankfully, the outcome for Surrey was similar to the top match with Aadam converting Charlie’s approach from 25ft for a birdie before Dorset missed from half of that length. Surrey win by 1 hole.

In the 4th match Captain David and his partner Harry jumped out to a 2 hole lead early on and held off their opponents, who were both Sherborne members, to win 2&1 following a huge drive from Harry and a sublime green side bunker shot from David that landed no more than foot from the hole on the 17th.

Dorset 0 Surrey 4 at Lunch.

Aadam led off the afternoon singles making early gains to be 4up around the turn before securing his point by 3&2.

Charlie flew out of the blocks making birdies on all 4 opening holes before going 6 up into the back nine and following a brief resistance from his opponent he was the victor by 4&3.

Terry in match 4 and Ben in match 6 were in a similar mood to Charlie, Terry being 5 under on his front nine, securing victory on the day for the team winning 7&6, and then Ben increased the points total winning by the same margin being 7 under the card at that point.

Harry Uzzell made it 9-0 to Surrey by winning 2&1 following a towering drive to the middle of the 17th green having led from the 1st green.

Jack found himself 5 down going into the back nine and although finding his usual form on the back nine he went down fighting by 2&1, narrowly missing a putt to take the match up the 18th hole.

Harry Crockett similarly battled away through the 2nd half of the round eventually securing a half point with a brilliant wedge to 2ft for a birdie on the closing hole.

David had been behind on the front nine before pulling a couple of holes back to be standing on the final tee 1 down.

Both players hit good drives and nice approaches to the par 4 with David being slightly the closest.

Dorset secured a par, but David’s birdie putt slid past resulting in a win for Dorset by the narrowest of margins.

Dorset 2.5   Surrey 9.5

The 2 away victories now put the team in a strong League position going into our home matches at Coombe Hill (July 31) & Farnham (August 7th).
