Surrey U18's Win First Match of The Season

The Surrey U18 team finally got their 2022 season underway, with an opening SEG league match away to Hampshire and Kent.

As usual with these SEG league matches, Surrey are drawn in a group of four Counties, with each playing 3 matches over the coming months in a mini league format. The winners of this league will go onto contest the SEG final in September against other Counties across the SEG region that have won their mini leagues.

The format at U18 is the usual scratch triple match play but with the added spice that the players do not have to be sent out in handicap order…….so strategy and planning from the coaches and managers plays an important part!

Surrey looked very strong on paper, with our highest handicap in the team being 0.0, but given we were visiting Hampshire and the course was Southwick Park, this was never going to be an easy match……..especially when we discovered that the fairways and greens were playing extremely firm, making ball control a challenge throughout.

The team prepared well though and led by captain, Nathan Woodham, put up a great show on the day! Resounding match wins came from Aidan Millham and Monty Holcombe, plus great contributions from James Bould, Oscar Lent, Rocky Chapman, Freddie Surgey who all won and halved matches, Luke Metcalf was our only player to find the going tough on the day but that happens at times.

Overall though it was an awesome result and a great way to kick start the league season. With final match results:

Surrey beat Kent: 6-2

Surrey beat Hampshire: 4.5-3.5

Kent beat Hampshire 4.5-3.5

This puts Surrey at the top of the league for now but there is a long way to go yet and our next fixture in the SEG League sees us visit Kent soon.

A fine meal was hosted by Hampshire post-match and once the respective captains had delivered their speeches the Surrey team headed for their long Easter Sunday journeys home!
