U18 Friendship Trophy ~ Surrey v L'Occitanie and Catalunya ~ write up and photos

The Friendship Trophy was presented by the European Tour and played for between junior mixed teams of six players from Catalunya in Spain, L’Occitanie in France and Surrey.  This year it was the turn of Catalunya to host the event and it was held at the Tour Course, PGA Catalunya and one of the best courses in Spain that regularly holds PGA Tournaments.

Each team is six junior players with four boys and two girls. The competition is designed to promote friendship across different regions in Europe and is a stroke play event over 36 holes. We had a practice round on Friday 29th November with 18 holes played on Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December. Each day the best four scores count out of the six played so each team can drop the two worst gross scores.

The Surrey team was Harry Crockett, Ben Partridge, John Richardson, Luke Stock, Olivia Horsford and Ella Hammond-Baveystock.

L’Occitanie took a commanding lead after the first day with a combined score of -1, with Surrey in second place on +11 and Catalunya on +18.  Olivia Horsford had an excellent level par score of 72.  Ella was going well but the tricky greens and some strategically placed trees did not help!  The boys also found the course was not quite as easy to score on as they had hoped.  Their counting scores were +1, +2, +8.  The French team from L’Occitanie had three scores under the par of 72 – two gross scores of 70 and one of 71 with their fourth score of 76.

The sun shone again on Sunday morning so the team knew that they would have to put in a good performance if they wanted to improve their position.  We started well and after 9 holes we were closing the gap with the French team but could not continue with that momentum – Olivia was our best player with a gross 72, with Harry on 73 and Ben with 74. The fourth score was 80 from John but this is too high in this format – this highest score from the French team for the second round was 75 and Catalunya also with 75.

The standout performance on the second day came from the top Cataluyan player David Puig (+4) who came in with a score of 66, -6 under par!  This meant his team finished -1 for the day, an improvement of 19 shots on their first day – quite an achievement. David played in the Junior Ryder Cup in 2018 and the Jacques Leglise Trophy in 2019 and is in the top 30 junior players in the World.

All the teams enjoyed the weekend.  Each group was made up of one from each team with the girls playing together and leading the field.  Language was a bit of a problem for some of the French players (!), but it is amazing how talking about golf breaks down barriers.  All part of the whole experience which is to foster good relations and encourage friendship between the three regions.  It would be nice to think that some of these players meet up again in competitions or at college and remember their first meeting at the Friendship Trophy

Our thanks to Juan Romeu (Manager from Catalunya) for all his hard work organising such a successful event for all the players and officials and in 2020 Surrey will host the event.

The final scores were:  1st – L’Occitanie – 582, 2nd – Catalunya – 593, 3rd – Surrey – 595
