A Team are beaten by Sutton Green in a very close match

The Surrey County A team visited Sutton Green for the annual match on a beautiful fresh autumn day, the game would be a mixture of morning foursomes followed by a quick lunch and afternoon singles played in fantastic spirit. Surrey had assembled a great squad and would be difficult to beat but with a total of 12 points available, it was all to play for. Our very supportive County Secretary, Steve McNeill, was there to get us all going.

Match 1 in the morning was a youthful affair with a combined age of the four players in excess of 200 years, thanks for reminding us Steve, which slowly went the home team way as Dave Primrose and Duncan Robertson ground out an impressive 4&3 win over Keith Collins and John Cassidy. Match 2 was much closer, Surrey paired Alex Cooper with a new man Daniel Johnson against Danny (just back from safari) Murray and Ross Buchanan which ended up all square. Match 3 pitted the young big hitting fourball of Sam Wood and Cameron Langley against Jonny Caldwell and Matt Giles who were very impressive and notched up another home win, 2 up. Match 4 was a crucial game for both teams and fortunately the Surrey pairing of Chris Mathews and another Surrey newbie Dean Jones held on to beat Andrew and Grant Morbey 3&2. Morning over and the match was finely balanced 2.5 – 1.5 in the home sides favour. Enough time for some great food and a quick reboot ready for the afternoon singles. Sutton Green then added a couple of fresh players for the afternoon to keep everyone on their toes.

Match 1. Dave played Alex and after 6 holes Alex asked what was had he done wrong, Dave was playing brilliant golf and was 5 under par (and 5 up) already and although Alex tried to get back he eventually went down 5&4. Typical of the spirit of the match they then sat down and watched with beer in hand the games go through the final few holes. Score 3.5 – 1.5.

Match 2. Daniel was evenly matched against Ross and so it proved as he held his nerve to edge a vital Surrey win on the last. Score 3.5 – 2.5.

Match 3. Match day captains Keith and Danny duelled for the next point, another close game just went in favour of the county with a birdie on the 17th to win. Score tied 3.5 each.

Match 4. Cameron and Jonny battled for the next point which also finished on the 17th and again went in favour of the county. Surrey now leading for the first time 4.5-3.5

Match 5. Sam played against Vince another close game gave the county another victory. Surrey 5.5-3.5 ahead.

By now all Surrey needed was 1 point for victory and the players were gathering on the patio with eyes trained we saw match 6 pairing of Chris and Grant coming towards us, this game just went in favour of Sutton Green and meant Surrey led by just 1 point, tensions were rising.

Match 7 saw Matt hit a very impressive lob out of view from behind some trees and make a birdie to win on the last against Dean. Score 5.5-5.5.

With the match score now level and only 1 game to finish we were all eyes up the last hole, information filtered through the match was still live but the home team player, Andrew, was 1 up and now close for his birdie which was to prove vital as John was forced to try for his birdie but missed and the game went to Sutton Green for a well-deserved and thrilling win 6.5-5.5, all the players had a great day and the 2 new Surrey men were asking for more. It could not have finished any closer, last putt on the last green, well done to all those who played and many thanks to Sutton Green for hosting us, a great victory for Sutton green but hopefully they will have us back next year for another game.
