County Card Meeting

 Walton Heath Golf Club

Wednesday 4th December 2019

A frosty Wednesday morning saw the arrival of players from across the County to the famous Walton Heath Golf Club for the final County Card event of the season. These events are well attended by players from many Clubs, although the representation at today’s event from Cuddington and Tyrrells Wood was amazing.

Playing the Old course with its tough par 3 starting hole the 80+ players fuelled by coffee and bacon rolls started their rounds, off the 1st and 15th tees.

Although it was somewhat frosty as the sun came up, so did the temperature and a bright sunny day ensued to warm up the competitors, adding to the enjoyment of playing such a lovely course, which was commented on by many of the players. The speed of play was excellent, as it has been in all the events this year events.

The competition was fierce with some impressive scoring for a winter event, a mere one point separating the top three.

The players sat down to a wonderful four course meal, at which we had the pleasure of Peter Allis in attendance, who presented the prizes to the winners. Before the presentations there was a raffle to raise money for the Walton Heath Captains charity, guide dogs for the blind, players are asked to donate a prize, many do. Top raffle prize today was a 4ball voucher for Walton Heath, in total £860 was raised.

We then moved onto the prize giving, Barry Banfield (Cuddington) won the nearest The Pin on the 7th with Paul Mangat (Burhill) getting closest on the 17th.

All these events are played as a full handicap stableford. In fourth place with 37pts was Jason Strudwick (Guildford). Two players finished on 38pts, after countback Richard Greaves (Cuddington) took third with Keith Butler (Guildford) just finishing ahead to claim second place. And the winner with an excellent 39pts was Robert Smith (Surbiton).

Our thanks to Walton Heath Golf Club for hosting the event and making everyone feel so welcome.

Next year’s events are already in place, the entry forms will be on the Surrey web site in January.

See you next year, happy golfing.
