Boys Handicap Knockout Final – Green Division
Fergus Jacobs (Walton Heath) v Robert Muir (Royal Wimbledon)
SUTTON GREEN Golf Club on Saturday August 31, 2019
The match was played on a breezy afternoon when there was a constant threat of a shower but thankfully only a ten-minute period when it rained. Just as well as neither of the boys had waterproofs or an umbrella!
The first three holes were halved with Fergus then winning the 4th with bogey to go 1 up. The match score remained the same until the par five 7th (Robert’s first shot hole) when an errant tee shot by Fergus resulting in a lost ball saw him concede the hole. Match All Square.
Robert won the 8th in Par to go 1 up and the 9th was halved in 4 to nett 4 to see Robert go into the back nine, 1 up in the match.
On the short par four 12th Fergus won the hole in Par and went on to win the par three 13th, followed by the par four 14th also in Par to complete a three-hole swing and go 2 up in the match.
On the 448 yards 15th, Robert’s final shot hole, he put his 7-iron approach shot only inches from the hole for a concession and to bring Fergus back to 1 up.
Unfortunately, Robert was unable to consolidate his comeback, hitting his tee shot on the Par three 16th into the greenside Penalty Area and losing the hole to Par thus going back to 2 down.
Perhaps fittingly, Fergus won the 17th and the match with a fine 20ft birdie putt which was the only putt of more than 6-8 feet sunk by either player in the round. Both had found the greens hard to read.
Fergus Jacobs won 3 & 1
