Our final league match threw up and unfamiliar scenario
where Surrey had already qualified for the final without hitting a ball. Our
initial expectation had been different with various permutations analysed to
reach the final. With results going our way in the match we had sat out at
Caversham Heath we had won with maximum points. We all breathed a little easier
as well because our final match was to be played with 3 of our top 5 boys
missing. As always what this presented was an opportunity a) for others to play
and b) to fight for a spot in the final (and give Ben and myself more
headaches). It also pushed some players up in playing positions and
presented them with a perhaps tougher battle.
As is usual with our preparation we had a much needed practice round the day before, Sandford Springs presented some very tricky holes where strategy was a must, it was also home of the Hampshire training for their juniors, offering an advantage with that local knowledge and familiarity.
The weather was kind, the rules were reinforced to parents and players and the match was underway. The course could at anytime trip a player up and it did not disappoint. It is nice to see players from all counties that have been playing together from U12's to this point, in some instances for 4-5 years.
With the pressure off we still really wanted maximum points and the boys did not let each other down, on completion of matches Surrey ran out winners against both counties, finishing the league with a maximum 12 points.
The usual post match analysis between players was underway, food was gratefully received and eaten, speeches were delivered and we all went our separate ways.
Final League results:
Surrey 12 points
BB&O 6 points
Hampshire 4 points
Sussex 2 points
