An overcast and blustery day brought the A team to Coombe Wood for the annual fixture and as we all gathered in the bar ahead of Storm Hannah which was sweeping across the UK we wondered if we would manage stay dry, luckily we missed the rain. The last time the A Team visited Coombe Wood, I remembered we were beaten by some brilliant home team players and with this in mind I managed to get 8 talented players with a blend of youth and experience into the County Team as we expected another tough match. After a coffee and a warm greeting in the bar from the members our County Secretary, Steve, got us started.
The match had been agreed as 18 holes 4BBB and with only 4 points available there could be no mistakes, with the first pairing including Jacob Aaholm (current County Champion) and Tom Everest we hoped the County would get the first point on the board but Coombe Wood had different ideas and with the big hitter Sean partnered by the ever youthful Bob, Coombe Wood got the first point on the board managing to win a close tussle on the 17th before multi-talented Bob from Coombe Wood rushed off to represent Surrey in a bridge tournament.
The second match saw John Morgan and James Molyneux take a much needed narrow victory for the County against Oz and Neil to square the match. The third match saw the captains on the day going head to head luckily for me my partner Michael bought his A game and the County managed another win against Mario and David to put us 2-1 up. The final pairing saw the ever youthful Steve Harding pair up with Rob Wicks and despite being up for most of the game were beaten by a barrage of birdies over the last few holes on the last green by Simon and Sandy to tie the match at 2-2.
Our thanks to the Club for hosting the County as the match was played in great spirit and was enjoyed by all concerned, once again Golf was the winner.
