Surrey Schools Golf entertained Berkshire Schools at a superbly presented Farnham Golf Club during the first week of the Easter holidays. This annual County Schools fixture is always keenly contested and the latest match certainly proved to be an equally tight affair. The morning foursomes matches definitely bore this out with three matches ending all square and only the Surrey pair of Ben Wilson and Max Brierley managing to secure a 3&2 win. Max also produced a magnificent hole-in-one at the 166yd par 3 thirteenth hole. At lunchtime Surrey led by two and and a half to one and a half points.
With eight points to play for in the afternoon singles Surrey got off to a flying start with captain Austin Gambel leading from the front with a 4&3 victory, closely followed by Axel Slizepcevic also with a 4&3 score. Berkshire, however, fought back with victories over Alex Gadd and Max Dawson but their charge was short lived when Max Brierley and Ben Wilson won 4&2 and 5&4 respectively. Charlie Pirini lost his match 3&2 in a hard fought contest, and Harry Yule ensured a Surrey victory by halving the final match with an excellent birdie 4 at the par 5 eighteenth.
The Berkshire Schools team organiser John Quinby, who is also the current President of the English Schools Golf Association, bought and presented a new trophy to the victorious Surrey Schools team and this will be played for on an annual basis.
