A Team are beaten by Banstead ~ write up

Surrey A Team verses Banstead Downs - 11th November

The annual match against Banstead Downs was postponed for a week due the their involvement in the Surrey Scratch final. We anticipated a tough match from a very talented team. Phil Brittain was Captain for the day at the club where he was a member for 25 years. Banstead is a venue where Surrey A have had a good deal of success in the past.

The day didn't start on a good note when Meg (Phil's mini schnauzer) decided to eat a whole Terry's chocolate orange. Instead of rallying the troops and preparing them for battle Phil found himself in a local veterinary surgery!   After treatment, Meg was allowed home, but the first three matches had started before Phil made it to the course.

The captain's decided that a four ball better ball format with all matches playing to the 18th, the team “most holes ahead” would decide the match.

Match number one was a tight affair with Mark Scott and James Molyneux securing a half.  Ed Keep and Jamie Harris finished one down in the second match.  Another half was achieved in match number three by Gareth Whiting-Balcombe and John Cassidy.  After 54 holes it was 1-0 to Banstead, so all to play for with the final match still on the course.  Unfortunately, Jacob Aaholm had to play it effectively on his own. Phil's golf game was similar to that of his poorly dog.

The 3 hole defeat lead to Banstead winning the match four holes to nil.

As ever, the company, conversation, course condition and hospitality was second to none.

The defeat was hard to take, but rest assured, we will be back.
