County Card Meeting
Walton Heath GC
Wednesday December 5
Old and New Courses
Green Tee Boxes
Full Handicap Allowance
As usual the last County Card meeting of the year was held at Walton Heath, unfortunately the weather wasn’t as wonderful as the venue and with heavy rain the night before and more forecast for the day itself it wasn’t looking good. Then as English weather does it threw a curve ball, as the players started to gather on the multiple starting tees the rain eased off and the fog came in! Thankfully after a one-hour delay play commenced and all the 107 players got finished.
With 107 players for the event both courses were used meaning there were two separate Competitions, 32 players were on the New and 75 players on the Old. Both competitions winners had to be decided by count back.
On the New Course Peter Mitchell (Betchworth Park) pipped Mark Hitch (Woodcote Park), both scoring 41ps but Peter scoring 1 point better on the back nine with 23pts.
The Old course also produced a tight finish with Keith Waters (West Byfleet) scoring 38pts and taking first place from Guy Stainer (Pyrford) courtesy of count back 20pts to 18pts. Close behind in 3rd was Jeremy Wyatt (London Scottish) with 37pts.
At this Christmas event players are asked to bring prizes for a raffle to raise money for the Club Captains charity, which is Parkinson’s. I have to say what a fantastic response we had and were overwhelmed with the number who did so, so thanks to all. Walton Heath also put up a fabulous prize of a 4ball voucher which was won by Phil Anderson (Tyrrells Wood). The final amount raised was £800!
Our thanks go to the team at Walton Heath, the office, the Greens staff, Professional shop, bar and of course the kitchen who served up a superb meal that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
And my thanks to the volunteers and Surrey staff who helped organise and run not only this event but all the others throughout the year, especially the ever-present Brian Cox, on players reception.
