The final match of the year was upon us, a mixed age group match U14-U12 at Sunningdale Heath Golf Club. The format was 4 ball better ball against 12 players from Hampshire with two points awarded for the overall match.
Once again holiday season, the Surrey Masters and illness presented us with some selection headaches even up to the morning of the event. We (Brian) overcame these challenges and are fortunate to have willing parents and players in abundance within Surrey who commit at short notice.
Glorious weather welcomed us to the heath and flexible, helpful management on behalf of Sunningdale Heath (also known as James) enabled us to have a multi tee start and get the match underway slightly early. Brian Woodham delivered the team talk, informed the players of their tees and sent them on there way. The course arrangement and length gives perfect match play conditions and you have to be right on your game to win or stay in a match.
A rocket signaled the start of the match and with birdies flying in everywhere, pars were seeing holes halved. Early in to the match Surrey had leads in every match except one. Some went backwards and forwards, two were over early, but Surrey still were only ever down in that one match. The pairing of Holcombe and Brash remained patient, calm and hung on. With the other five matches over and done, Aidan Millham & Nathan Woodham maintained their 100% record, however this one pair remained on the golf course. With three holes to play it looked certain that this pair would go two down, but putting errors gave Surrey the lifeline needed and with two to play they were all square, eventually running out winners 2 up.
The day was completed with sausage, egg and chips and a slab of chocolate cake. Speeches from both of the respective captains were delivered and teams, parents started their journeys home.
This match concludes the U12-U14's season with a 100% record for U12's, 100% record for U13's and 100% record for U14's.
