Surrey Golf Scratch Plate Final
Held at Clandon Regis Golf Club on Sunday 14th October 2018
Even the weather, which was cold, wet and dull could not take the shine off this five-a-side golf match between West Hill Golf Club and Malden Golf Club held at Clandon Regis on Sunday 14th October. All five matches were very keenly competitive but played in a friendly and sporting manner in the best traditions of the game. This was demonstrated in the score at the conclusion of normal play with the scores locked at two matches to West Hill and two to Malden and one, Match 2, “all square” after eighteen holes. This was a fair reflection of how closely the two teams were matched and an honourable “halved” overall match would have been appropriate, but a conclusive overall result was mandatory.
Therefore, the two players in Match 2, Andy Dusek of West Hill and Paul Colfar of Malden went back to the 16th Tee to compete in the “sudden death” play-off round holes 16, 17 and 18 in the gathering gloom until a result was achieved. Holes 16 and 17 were halved, but Paul finally clinched the match for Malden with a “win” on the eighteenth green.
Despite the constant rain all afternoon, the golf course showed no signs of surface “casual water” and both teams were complimentary about the superb condition of the golf course and especially the “greens”.
