U13 retain the Friendship Trophy at Guildford GC

The second and final major silverware available for the U13's and a home venue at Guildford Golf Club. A triple matchplay match against 12 players from Sussex & 12 players from Hampshire for the Friendship Trophy with winning simply attained for the results against the opposing counties.

Selection and confirming a final team sheet had been an absolute nightmare with players missing to play the Rookie League final, players pulling out including on the morning of the match. However, after more emails and phone calls revision 'D' was printed and the team was finalised.

Once again these challenges present opportunities for others and they were clearly grabbed with both hands.

A slightly overcast, windy start to the day, changed to beautiful warm sunny conditions and all players were off the 1st tee in their 3 ball groups.

After 9 holes and a catch up on scores, some matches were in the balance, some we were slightly down in and we were not looking to be in commanding position. The back 9 saw a rally from Surrey, players fought back, found another gear, pushed on and the score sheet on 18 began to look better and better. With 6 matches completed scores between Surrey & Sussex were extremely tight, a couple of matches then went Hampshire's way, not helping either Surrey or Sussex. Gaps were appearing, the suspense was mounting but once again the rear guard delivered only dropping a single point in the last 3 matches.

In the end with everyone finished Surrey retained the Friendship Trophy. A clean sweep had been completed for the U13's to match the U14's 2018 record.

The day was completed with a hearty burger and chips, speeches from all of the respective captains were delivered, the trophy was represented to Surrey, and the room emptied in the blink of an eye.
