U16 v BB&O at Huntercombe

MUGS Match at Huntercombe Golf Club Oxfordshire

28th August 2018

This annual friendly match between the two Counties is sponsored by a society of gentlemen called the Mortimer Ubiquitous Golf Society or MUGS for short. The venue is alternates between Huntercombe GC in Oxfordshire and West Hill GC in Surrey. The format is ten aside 18 holes foursomes followed by 18 holes singles.

The weather for the morning foursomes was overcast but with no rain in sight the players tee’d off on the tricky par 3 first hole. But as the morning foursomes went on BB&O took control and despite a good effort the Surrey boys eventually lost three, won one and halved one to go in for lunch at 3.5pts to 1.5pts down.

Despite the disappointment of the score the Surrey boys were really upbeat, confident and determined about the afternoon singles that were too come and after an excellent lunch they set about trying to get back on terms with the BB&O team, they’d done it before and they were adamant they could do it again.

And what a fantastic effort they made, at one stage Surrey were up in seven of the ten games which would have won the day but eventually the BB&O boys fought back to gain some valuable points to share the match 7.5pts to 7.5pts, although it meant that Surrey retained the Trophy won at West Hill the previous year.

It was a close-run match and although the Surrey boys won the afternoon singles 6pts to 4pts it just wasn’t quite enough to take the day but in fairness a draw was a fair result as the players from both teams had played so well and in such good spirit. It had been a great day.

Surrey look forward to welcoming the BB&O boys to West Hill in 2019 and our thanks to Huntercombe for hosting and the MUGS for their continued fantastic support of the fixture.
