The Finals of the Boys’ Handicap Knockouts were held at Sunningdale Golf Club on Tuesday 28th August. The New course was in splendid condition and the play in both finals matched the excellent surroundings and weather.
In the Blue Final Daniel Prince (Wentworth) reached the turn 4 up on Mackenzie Thorpe. Daniel’s straight play paid dividends over Mackenzie’s longer but more wayward shots. On the back 9 both players came alight with Mackenzie getting 2 birdies in a row on 10 and 11 but 11 year old Daniel would not buckle and came to the 17th 1 up. On the par 3 17th Mackenzie had the honour and hit a great shot to 12th feet only to watch Daniel hit his tee shot to a foot. Mackenzie just missed his birdie putt and Daniel tapped in for his 2nd birdie of the 9, his first was for a nett eagle! to win the match 2 and 1 and thus the title.
The Green Final was very close at the turn with both Tom Corrigan (Sunbury) and Jamie Pritchard (Burhill) playing very steady golf to reach the turn all square. The back 9 proved to be a birdie blitz with Tom playing it in 4 under whilst Jamie scored 2 under. After 18 holes, however, they were still all square and so went down the 19th. Another half on 19 took them to the Par 3 20th where both players missed the green. Jamie chipped long but Tom, with the easier shot, was able to roll his ball up to the hole and the putt was conceded. When Jamie could not hole his putt Tom won the hole and thus the title.
Thanks go to Sunningdale for their superb hospitality and to John Barnes for refereeing the matches, although there were few decisions to be made with the matches played in excellent spirit. Congratulations to all 4 players for playing such high quality and entertaining golf.
