In the return leg of the SEG Colts League Hampshire visited Sutton Green to try and get revenge for the defeat by Surrey earlier in the year at Sherfield Oaks GC. The course at Sutton Green was still suffering from the intense heat wave we have been having but the greens and tees were in fine condition.
The format being 4 x Foursome in the morning and 8 x singles in the afternoon.
Colts Captain Billy Whiteman & partner Lewis Hinton lead from the front literally, coming in with a solid 2&1 win to get the Surrey team off to a fine start, the second pair out Harry Uzzell and Sean Mullan went down 3&2 after a spirited battle. Next out Peter Baeg & Sam Barthram won a tight match 1up, the match of the last pair, Obe Ayton & Callum MacKay went right down to the last putt with Obe sinking a 20-footer to take the win for the pair.
So, heading into lunch Surrey were leading 3-1, but it certainly wasn’t over, and Hampshire would fightback.
Lewis Hinton was out first in the afternoon singles and increased the Surrey lead with a 2&1 win, the next two players Billy Whiteman and Obe Ayton both went down to their Hampshire opponents, the fightback was on as far as Hampshire were concerned.
But Sean Mullan steadied the ship for Surrey with an important 2&1 win, followed by Sam Barthram gaining a valuable ½ point finishing all Square by winning the last. Then Harry Uzzell came in with a 3&1 victory to secure a Surrey win, with 6 ½ points out of a possible 12.
Peter Baeg just lost on the last and Callum MacKay finished All Square to give Surrey a final score of 7pts to 5pts and the double over Hampshire, not something that happens very often in this very competitive age group.
After play the players enjoyed sandwiches and cake then made their way home to watch the end of the Open!
Our thanks to Sutton Green for hosting this match and looking after us so well.
