The Surrey U14 entered their zone match in Inter Counties League already knowing that, bar a small miracle, they had already qualified for the final. This time we were to be hosted by Hertfordshire at the West Herts Golf Club., which is in a great setting on the outskirts of London, As with all courses currently, conditions were bone dry and so the course would be challenging for the all of the teams.
This year we have been drawn in the group stages against Hampshire and Hertfordshire……..so we knew we were in for a tough battle. The format for the day was a 12-a-side (plus 1 playing reserve) triple match play off scratch, with 2 points being awarded for a win and 1 point for a halved match.
As the team had already progressed to the final we did not prepare in our normal fashion and gave the practice round a miss – and given yet another hot day in the 80’s that was probably a good idea as it conserved the boys energy!
Going out in strict handicap order, our opening player Rocky Aidan Millham found himself in two difficult matches against two very strong opponents but he did a fabulous jog of halving both his matches and securing 2 early points. He was followed by Rocky Chapman, who secured a comfortable win against Hampshire by a margin of 7&5 but narrowly lost out to Herts on the 18th green to a superb ‘eagle’ from the Herts player. Two more good points secured though! Then came Nathan Woodham who cruised to two comfortable wins, beating Hants 5&3 and Herts 4&3, in a round that saw him make an ‘eagle’ himself on the par 5, 12th hole…..and thus secured us another 4 points. We followed this up with another day of great golf securing further points like this:
Oliver Wren: Beat Hants 5&4; Lost to Herts 5&4
Tom Kelly: Lost to Hants 3&2; A/S with Herts
Kris Kim: Beat Hants 8&7; Beat Herts 8&7
Edward Dimayuga: Beat Hants 3&2 Beat Herts 2 up
Hashim Banday: Beat Hants 4&2; Beat Herts 1 up
Cameron Cridge: Beat Hants 7&6 Beat Herts 5&4
Oscar Lent: Lost to Hants 2 down; Lost to Herts 4&3
Leo Vorobyev: Beat Hants 5&4; Beat Herts 3&2
Sam Wood: Lost to Hants 1 down; Beat Herts 5&4
So with another amazing final score of the day of: Surrey beat Hampshire 18-6 and Surrey beat Hants 17-7. For the neutral’s out there, Herts beat Hants 18-6.
A much need dinner was enjoyed by all, and we thanks Hertfordshire Golf for their hospitality, and some inspiring words were said by our Captain for the day, Kris Kim, before we all headed home.
