In the first South East Group League match of the season the
U16’s hosted Hampshire and Sussex at the beautiful but very brown Camberley
Heath. Although the fairways were hard due to the heat the greens were and tees
were in great condition.
The eight players from each County play a scratch three-way match play format, so each player in a 3ball are up against each other, a very interesting and difficult format to play in.
Lead by Harry Crockett the Surrey team in order of play was Joe Wood, Luke Stock, Demi Di Matteo, Ben Kelly, Austin Gambel, Tommy Noel and Barnes Wallis.
The first few matches were tight but looking good with Surrey just having their noses in front, but as the matches progressed Hampshire began to take the lead on both Surrey and Sussex, although the Surrey players kept their hold on Sussex.
After the first five matches were in the scores were Surrey 1 v Hampshire 4 and Surrey 3 v Sussex 2.
We needed to win the last three matches against Hampshire for a half and that’s exactly what the boys in the tail did, all three of them brilliantly won both matches to secure a 4-4 half with Hampshire and a 6-2 win over Sussex.
A good solid start to the league.
After play the boys enjoyed a meal together then after the speeches everyone made their way home.
Thanks to Camberley Heath for hosting this match and looking after us so well.
The next league match is away in Kent at Daren’t Valley against Kent and Sussex.
