U14 beats Hants 21-3 and Herts 19-5

The Surrey U14 Squad kicked off their Inter Counties League fixtures with an away trip to Sherfield Oaks Golf Club in Hampshire. This is a nice course, part of the Crown Golf collection, with some challenging holes and a little water!

This year we have been drawn in the group stages against Hampshire and Hertfordshire……..so we knew we were in for a tough battle. The format for the day was a 12-a-side (plus 1 playing reserve) triple match play off scratch, with 2 points being awarded for a win and 1 point for a halved match.

In preparation for the match we had also taken the boys down for a practice round the day before – unfortunately the practice round featured several heavy downpours and we eventually had to come off after 15 holes! However, nothing perturbed the Surrey boys certainly stepped up a notch on the day though and some great golf and teamwork showed through.

Going out in strict handicap order, our opening player Rocky Chapman found it tough going and lost both of his matches. He was followed by Oliver Wren, who secured our first points with a win against Hampshire but a narrow defeat to Hertfordshire. Then came Aidan Millham who battle tremendously well defeating Hertfordshire comfortably and halving his match with Hampshire. Then what followed was a stunning set of match results. With the boys winning a further 35 points from a possible 36, like this:

Nathan Woodham: Beat Hants 7&5; Beat Herts 5&4

Tom Kelly: Beat Hants 5&4; Beat Herts 1 up

Hashim Banday: Beat Hants 2 up; Beat Herts 2& 1

Cameron Cridge: Beat Hants 3&2; Beat Herts 6&5

Luca Knowles: Beat Hants 2&1; Beat Herts 7&6

Kris Kim: Beat Hants 7&6; Halved with Herts

Edward Dimayuga: Beat Hants 5&4; Beat Herts 6&5

David Razinskas: Beat Hants 2&1; Beat Herts 3&2

Sam Wood: Beat Hants 9&7; Beat Herts 8&6

So an amazing final score of the day of: Surrey beat Hampshire 21-3 and Surrey beat Herts 19-5. For the neutral’s out there, Herts beat Hants 14-10.

A special mention (and great thanks for his attitude) must go to James Munns. He travelled down the Hampshire to take part as our ‘playing reserve’ only for both the Herts and Hants playing reserves withdrawing.

A much need dinner was enjoyed by all, and we thanks Hampshire Golf for their hospitality, and some inspiring words were said by our Captain for the day, Rocky Chapman, before we all headed home!
