Surrey U13's began their season with a 4BBB match against Essex away at The Warren GC . Putting a team together in the Easter holidays presented the first challenge with 3-4 boys absent and a late injury causing headaches. Dipping down in to the U12's presented a solution and the team was finalised.
With a slow weather hampered start to this golfing season both sides were going to have to dig deep and soldier on. Saturday had seen us all enjoy some glorious weather but Sunday returned to normal with fog, a spinkling of rain and a dip in temperatures. With good facilities to warm up ever Surrey player was present and began their routine.
Essex were great hosts as always and prior to the match made a great selection of sandwiches available, which were enjoyed by parents and the teams
Each Surrey player stepped on the tee and the quality from the tee shots was obviously high. Max Saunders on his debut did try to wipe out the left hand side on the first but settled down after this.
The front nine at The Warren is about a hilly as anywhere you will find in Essex and presented a real challenge to both teams. All the boys should now be expert on balls below feet, above feet, uphill and downhill lies.
As is usual at this level the front match looked a very tight affair through six holes and the quality was extremely high. However our front pairing of Millham & Woodham turned 3 up and never looked back. However behind these we saw tight matches at matches 2-4. Another set back for Surrey saw Kris Kim retire ill after 9 holes with himself and Hashim 1 down. I have to give credit to an amazing performance by Hashim who pushed on alone and won the back nine and match overall. The strength in depth was once again evident in the matches 6-8 with Surrey posting great results over the front 9.
Each of the U13's pairings showed great team spirit and were a credit to the County they represent winning 7 of 8 18 hole matches overall. The only points dropped were a matched halved and one point on the front nine
The boys & managers enjoyed burger & chips. Speeches were well delivered by Aidan Millham of Surrey & Marley Reid of Essex and players & parents were sent on their way.
Jumping on the A12 and M25 we made our way home with the first match and a great result in the bag.
