David Gurr wins the Boys Scratch KO for a second year!

Surrey Junior Boys Scratch Knockout Final

On a somewhat wet and soggy Worplesdon golf course, holder David Gurr (Burhill) and Lucas Gambel (Cuddington) tee’d it up on the 1st to battle it out for the title. Both boys hit great drives and followed these with good approach shots, and then two putted for par and a half, as they also did on the 2nd.

The 3rd proved a bit tricky but David managed to win the hole to go 1up. The 4th & 5th were shared and David then made a fine birdie on the 6th to extend his lead. Lucas took the 7th to pull one back, the 8th was shared, but David won the 9th to go back to 2up. It had taken them 1 hour 20 minutes to play the front nine holes!

The par three 10th was also won by David with a super birdie, his tee shot landing no more than a foot away the hole, although the ball spun back 6ft he sunk the putt to go 3up.

Nothing Lucas could do about that, but he wasn’t about to give up that’s for sure, he showed tremendous skill and fighting spirit by winning the 11th, 12th & 13th to bring it all back to levels. This was a real ding dong of a final and although very competitive it was played in fantastic spirit, the boys chatting and enjoying the experience.

The 14th was halved then David made a fantastic eagle at the par five 15th to gain a crucial advantage, not to be outdone Lucas won the 16th to level things again.

The 17th was shared, so it was all square going down the 18th. Lucas hit a super drive down the middle, David slightly pulled his tee shot and although it had landed and was slowing down it was heading out of bounds until it hit an oak tree and ricochet back into play. David then hit the green and two putted to win 1up, Lucas had missed left, chipped on and two putted.

David had achieved something few have and retained the title, no easy feat with the high quality of youngsters who entered this prestigious competition. Although runner up Lucas had also shown what a good golfer he is, he was very gracious in defeat as was David in victory.

The trophy was present by Steve McNeill (Surrey Assistant Secretary)
