U16 v BB&O U16
MUGS Match at West Hill Golf Club
29th August 2017
This annual friendly match between the two Counties is sponsored by a society of gentlemen called the Mortimer Ubiquitous Golf Society or MUGS for short. The venue is alternated between Huntercombe in Oxfordshire and West Hill in Surrey. The format is 18 holes foursomes followed by 18 holes singles.
On a pleasant August morning the players were started on the first by County President Jack Buchanan as they tee’d off for the morning foursomes. Surrey Captain Enrique Dimayuga and playing partner John Richardson got the team off to a good start with a win 2up. Following them was Lewis Brown and Ben Partridge who totally dominated their match winning 5&4. Surrey’s third pairing of Joe wood and John Keane went down to a good pairing from BB&O, but Luke Barnes and Ryan Griffiths took their match 4&3 to give Surrey a solid 3-1 lead going into the afternoon singles.
Unfortunately there had been a mix up by BB&O and they had only brought 8 players not the usual 10, meaning that Harry Crockett and Luke Stock had no match, so they took on each other in a singles game. For the afternoon singles two players from BB&O came along to give each of them a match albeit a non scoring one as they were older players.
In the afternoon singles Enrique Dimayuga again lead from the front winning 7&6, John Richardson had a battle royal and ended all square, as did Ben Partridge. Lewis Brown went down to his opponent but Joe Wood got Surrey back on track with a solid win. John Keane then just lost 1down.
But Surrey’s final two players Luke Barnes and Ryan Griffiths both won 6&4 to give Surrey a 5pts to 3pts win in the singles and an overall win 8pts to 4pts and gain back the trophy they had lost at Huntercombe GC last year.
